Adding wallets

How to import a recovery phrase or private key, watch an address, connect a Ledger or Seed Vault, and manage the accounts in the mallow wallet.

The app can hold many wallets at once. To add one, tap your account name at the top of the screen, then Add wallet. The Add account screen lists every way to bring a wallet in:

OptionWhat it addsCan it sign?
Create new accountA new recovery phrase, or an Apple or Google sign-in walletYes
Import recovery phraseAccounts from a 12- or 24-word phrase made elsewhereYes
Import wallets from recovery phraseMore accounts from a phrase already in the appYes
Import private keyOne wallet on one chainYes
Connect hardware walletAccounts held on a LedgerYes, on the Ledger
Import from Seed VaultSolana accounts held in Seed Vault (shown only on phones that have it)Yes, in Seed Vault
Watch addressAny address, to look atNo

On a fresh install, the import options are on the first screen under I already have a wallet.

Importing a recovery phrase

  1. Choose Import recovery phrase.
  2. Enter your 12 words in order. For a 24-word phrase, turn on Use a 24-word recovery phrase instead.
  3. Tap Continue. If the app says Invalid recovery phrase. Please check your words., a word is misspelled or out of order.
  4. Choose the accounts to import and tap Import wallets.

Choosing accounts

A recovery phrase holds a numbered series of accounts, and each account has one address per chain. The picker shows the first five accounts, each with its Solana, Ethereum, and Tezos address.

  • Tick an account to import all of its addresses, or tick single addresses.
  • Each account shows the artworks and balance found on its Solana address, or No activity. Ethereum and Tezos addresses aren't scanned here, so an account can hold assets there and still read No activity.
  • Tap + Show more for the next five accounts.
  • Addresses you already imported are marked Imported.

If the address you expect is missing, tap the settings icon at the top and turn on Show legacy Solana accounts. This adds the addresses older Solana wallets derived from the same phrase. The exact paths are listed under Derivation paths.

To come back for more accounts later, use Import wallets from recovery phrase.

Importing a private key

Choose Import private key, paste the key, and tap Next. The app works out the chain from the key's format, shows the wallet it controls, and adds it when you tap Add wallet.

ChainAccepted formats
SolanaBase58 secret key (what most Solana wallets export), a 128-character hex string, or a JSON array of 64 numbers
Ethereum64 hex characters, with or without a leading 0x
TezosAn edsk… key (Ed25519). spsk… and p2sk… keys aren't supported

A private key adds exactly one wallet on one chain. It's stored on your device like a recovery phrase, but there's no phrase behind it. Keep your own copy of the key, because removing the wallet deletes it from the app.

Watching an address

A watch-only wallet shows the art and tokens of an address without holding its key. Use it to follow your own cold wallet, or to look at anyone else's collection.

  1. Choose Watch address.
  2. Enter a Solana, Ethereum, or Tezos address, or a .sol or .eth name.
  3. Tap Continue.

A watched wallet can't send, list, or sign anything. Where an action needs a signature, the app tells you the wallet is view-only. To act with that address, import its recovery phrase or private key.

Hardware wallets

Ledger

The app connects to a Ledger over Bluetooth. Your keys stay on the Ledger, and every transaction is confirmed on its screen. See Hardware wallet support.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and unlock the Ledger.
  2. On the Ledger, open the app for the chain you want: Solana, Ethereum, or Tezos.
  3. In mallow, choose Connect hardware wallet and pick your device from the list.
  4. Select the accounts to add, then tap the import button. It counts your selection, for example Import 2 accounts.

The app reads accounts for the chain whose Ledger app is open, so one pass adds one chain. To add another chain, open its app on the Ledger and repeat.

When you later sign with a Ledger wallet, the app asks you to reconnect the device with the matching app open. Things that commonly go wrong:

  • The device is not found. Check that Bluetooth is on, the Ledger is unlocked, and the right app is open, then scan again.
  • "Bluetooth pairing is out of sync." In your phone's Bluetooth settings, forget the Ledger, then connect again.
  • "Blind signing is not enabled." In the Solana app on the Ledger, open Settings and enable Allow blind sign.

Seed Vault

Seed Vault is the key store built into Solana Mobile phones. On those phones the app shows Use Seed Vault and Import from Seed Vault. On every other Android phone, and on iOS, the option doesn't appear.

Seed Vault wallets are Solana only. The keys never leave Seed Vault, and it asks you to approve each signature itself. Choose the option, allow mallow to read the accounts when Seed Vault asks, select the accounts, and import them. To manage the seed itself, open the account in Edit Accounts and tap Manage in Seed Vault.

Managing accounts

Tap your account name, then Switch. The Wallets tab lists your accounts. Tap one to make it active.

Tap Edit to open Edit Accounts:

  • Reorder: drag an account up or down.
  • Rename or change the image: tap an account, enter a name of up to 32 characters, and pick an image.
  • Turn chains on or off for one account: under Toggle addresses, switch its Solana, Tezos, or Ethereum address on or off. This is available for accounts that come from a recovery phrase, and an account must keep at least one address.
  • Remove: tap Remove account, or swipe the account left in the list. The device must keep at least one account.

To hide Ethereum or Tezos across the whole app instead, use Settings → Active Networks. Solana can't be switched off.

Removing an account can delete its keys

Removing the last account of a recovery phrase deletes that phrase from the device, and removing an imported private key deletes the key. Neither can be recovered from the app afterwards. Check your backup first. See Backing up your recovery phrase. Ledger and Seed Vault keys stay on the Ledger or in Seed Vault, and a social sign-in wallet can be added back by signing in again.
