Buying
Buy a fixed-price 1/1 or an edition on mallow: what you need, what you pay on top of the price, and what arrives in your wallet.
This page covers artwork listed on mallow at a set price: a single 1/1, and editions. Auctions are on Bidding. For listings that come from Magic Eden, Tensor, Objkt or OpenSea, see Other marketplaces.
Before you buy
- A Solana wallet. Click Sign in to buy on the artwork page. The Sign in window lists the wallets installed in your browser and other supported wallets. Social login (Google, Apple, X, Discord, Facebook or Email) creates a wallet for you, tied to that login.
- The listing's token. A seller prices a listing in SOL, mallowSOL, USDC, SMORES or another supported token. The price on the page shows the token and an estimate in USD.
- Some SOL for fees. Every purchase pays Solana's network fee in SOL, whatever token the artwork is priced in.
If you're signed in with a wallet from another chain, mallow asks you to switch to a Solana wallet before you can buy.
Buying a fixed-price 1/1
Check the listing
The artwork page shows the List price. A timed listing also shows Listing starts or Listing ends with a countdown. A resale shows Listed on the secondary market by and the seller's name.
Click Buy
There's no checkout window for a 1/1. Buy opens your wallet with the transaction ready to approve. You pay in the token the listing is priced in.
If the sale includes a physical artwork and the seller asks for a shipping address, a shipping form opens first. See Physicals.
Approve in your wallet
The payment and the artwork move in the same transaction. The page confirms with Artwork collected.
If you have an open offer on the artwork, the page shows Cancel offer in place of Buy. Cancel the offer to buy at the list price.
Buying an edition
An edition sale mints a new, numbered copy to your wallet each time someone buys. The page shows the Edition price, how many are sold (12 / 50 sold for a limited edition, 12 sold for an open one) and any countdown.
Pick a tier, if there are any
A sale with tiers shows Select your edition with a Choose your edition menu. Each tier lists its artwork, its price and Includes Physical when a physical piece comes with it. Buy stays disabled until you choose one.
Click Buy and set the quantity
The Buy edition window opens. Set the Quantity. Without a wallet limit you can buy up to 10 at a time.
Check the cost
Total cost shows what leaves your wallet. Open Fee details to see it split into Artwork cost and Mint & transaction fee.
Click Buy edition and approve
Each edition is minted in its own transaction. If the sale sells out while yours are being sent, some can fail. You receive, and pay for, only the editions that went through, and the confirmation shows how many you collected.
Pricing types
| The seller chose | What you see | What you pay for the artwork |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed price | Total cost | The edition price times the quantity |
| Free | Artwork cost reads Free | Nothing. The Mint & transaction fee still applies |
| Collector chooses price | Set your price | The amount you enter. Avg shows the average paid so far; click it to use that amount |
Start, end and allowlist
| The page shows | What it means |
|---|---|
| Starts in | The sale hasn't opened. There's no Buy button yet |
| Allowlist Ends | Only allowlisted wallets can buy until the countdown ends |
| Sale ends in | The sale closes when the countdown ends, sold out or not |
| Sale ended | The sale is closed |
A seller can allowlist holders of their own artworks, holders of specific collections, or a list of wallet addresses. mallow checks the wallet you're signed in with. If it qualifies, the button reads Buy. If it doesn't, the button reads Not allowlisted and is disabled. For a holder allowlist, the qualifying artwork must be in that same wallet, and compressed NFTs don't count.
Most allowlists run for a set time at the start of a sale, and anyone can buy once Allowlist Ends reaches zero. A seller can instead allowlist the entire sale, and then it never opens to other wallets.
Wallet limit
A sale with a limit shows Wallet limit on the page and Max: N per wallet in the buy window. The limit counts every edition your wallet has bought in this sale. Once you reach it, the button reads Wallet limit reached.
After the sale ends
Collectors can resell their copies. When the original sale is over and a copy is listed, the edition page shows Lowest secondary price and a Buy lowest priced button. That purchase works like a fixed-price 1/1.
What you pay on top of the price
| Fixed-price 1/1 | Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | List price | Artwork cost: the edition price times the quantity |
| On top of the price | Solana's network fee, including your priority fee | Mint & transaction fee, charged per edition. It's mallow's print fee, the rent and protocol fee for creating the new edition on Solana, and your priority fee |
mallow's sale fee and the creator's royalties are taken out of the price before the seller is paid, so they never add to what you pay. Current amounts are on Fees.
For some artwork types, Solana also charges a small rent deposit for the account that holds the artwork in your wallet.
If you hold Cream, the buy window offers Use N Cream to pay for minting costs. Tick it and the Mint & transaction fee is struck through.
The priority fee is yours to set, under Priority fee in the user menu. See Settings.
Paying with a different token
In the Buy edition window, the menu next to the total lists the listing's token first, then the other supported tokens your wallet holds. Choose one and mallow swaps it into the listing's token as part of the purchase.
- The amount shown with a
~is an estimate. It refreshes while the window is open, and it already includes the swap fee and the exchange's price impact - The quantity is fixed at 1
- You still need SOL for fees. On a listing priced in another token, that SOL amount is shown beside the token total
- Cream can't be combined with a swap
- Swap unavailable means no route was found for that pair. Choose another token
The swap and the purchase are normally one transaction. When they don't fit in one, mallow sends the swap first and the purchase second, and asks you to approve each. If the swap goes through and the purchase then fails, you keep the swapped tokens. Try again and mallow uses them instead of swapping a second time.
Swapping isn't offered for a fixed-price 1/1, for sales where the collector chooses the price, for sales with a wallet-address allowlist, or for a few other listings. Pay those in the listing's token.
What you receive
The artwork is in your wallet as soon as the transaction confirms. There's nothing to claim. It appears under Owned on your mallow profile and in any Solana wallet that shows NFTs.
An edition is a new copy with the next number in the series. If the artwork has files for holders only, see Exclusive content.
Primary and secondary sales
A primary sale is the first sale, by the creator. A secondary sale is a resale by a collector. You pay the listed price either way, and the artwork you receive is the same.
The difference is where the price goes. In a primary sale it goes to the creators, less mallow's sale fee. In a secondary sale it goes to the seller, less mallow's sale fee and the creators' royalty. The sale fee differs between the two. See Fees.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What happened |
|---|---|
| Failed to purchase artwork | The transaction didn't complete. If someone else bought the artwork first, or the seller raised the price or cancelled, your purchase is rejected and the price isn't taken |
| Insufficient funds, need … | Your wallet is short of the amount shown, in the token shown |
| Insufficient SOL | You have the price but not enough SOL for fees |
| Transaction expired | The network didn't confirm in time. Raise your priority fee and try again |
| Insufficient supply | Fewer editions are left than the quantity you chose |
